Few topics spark more disagreement than prophecy and end times, and today’s passage is one of the most debated. Jesus speaks of a coming tribulation—a bloody, catastrophic event also foretold in Daniel. Many modern evangelicals believe this refers to a future global tribulation after Christians are raptured. I don’t hold that view anymore, though I once did. What I’ll teach over the next two weeks reflects a minority position today, but it was the majority view among many early church fathers. I approach this passage with humility, knowing I could be wrong—and that’s exactly how every Christian should handle prophecy. But careful, systematic study of this week’s text reveals something stunning: even in the most troubling prophecies, Jesus offers profound encouragement and deep confidence in the reliability of Scripture.
