I remember one of the most frightening experiences of my life as a little boy just joining cub scouts. I was 7 years old and had been a part of the troop for a couple months and we went on our first camping trip. There were 5 cubbies and 2 troop leaders, deep in the woods, far from city lights. They were so excited to take me on a mission I had never been on before, and I started to get excited as they talked. We were going Snipe hunting! Now I had never seen a snipe, didn’t know what they looked like, knew nothing except what they told me, a little pheasant bird that doesn’t fly and runs around in the middle of the night. Imagine my abject horror when they all disappear with their flashlights leaving me alone holding a bag, in pitch black darkness. I have no idea where I am or where to go. Screaming in horror so loudly they abandon the prank. “Joey! Its ok, follow my voice.” Trust me that’s all I wanted to do, I heard nothing but that voice!
