Mark 9:30–41
No.42- Kingdom Ambition

Most of life on earth is driven by ambition, and it touches almost every part of who we are. But for most of us, that ambition doesn’t push us to serve—it pushes us to win, to climb, to establish a pecking order. We compete with siblings, friends, coworkers, and entire industries, feeding pride and arrogance while fighting against humility. And humility isn’t exactly celebrated in our culture; nations don’t gain influence because of it, Wall Street doesn’t hand out raises for it, and the world has no merit system for humility—only for success. Our natural human spirit bends toward self‑promotion, self‑preservation, and even self‑worship, and we constantly—whether consciously or subconsciously—try to satisfy those drives by manipulating circumstances, structures, and even people. We judge those whose goals or opinions oppose ours, especially in areas like politics, because abandoning ambition isn’t natural for us. Humility requires intervention. Today we learn about how the disciples still had selfish Kingdom Ambition, and what it says about us.
