Monday Morning Reflections w/ Lori Griffith
Picture this: I’m in the kitchen making dinner. Out of the corner of my eye, I see my cat, Bob, prancing in with a proud look on his face and a "gift" in his mouth. It’s a lizard.
Immediately, I scream, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Ewwww! Take that back outside!”
Unfortunately, the lizard is already dead, and now I’m mad at Bob.
To Bob, this was a gift. This was love. This was him taking care of me! Meanwhile, I’m standing there shrieking.
He thought he was being righteous and would be rewarded with a treat for his hard work. But it didn't prove his righteousness to me at all. And he didn't get a treat.
I thought of this when we heard the story in 2 Samuel when Rechab and Baanah brought King David the head of his rival, Ish-bosheth. They traveled all night, carrying this gruesome "gift," fully expecting a massive reward. Instead, David was angry and ordered them executed for murdering an innocent man. They thought their work made them right with the king, but they completely misjudged his heart.
Pastor Joe brought absolute fire to the platform yesterday. If he ever unhooked his mic and dramatically dropped it on the platform, yesterday would have been the day!
In his sermon preview, he said: "The King doesn't want your resume, He wants you to trust His.
"How often do we strut into the throne room of God, lay down our "dead lizards", our own good deeds, our rule-following, or our spiritual resumes and look up expecting a treat?
The truth is, Jesus wants us to come empty-handed. There is no amount of spiritual principles I can live by that will get me closer to Jesus or earn me a faster pass into heaven.
But even though we come to Him empty-handed, His grace will never leave us empty-handed. BOOM
Thank You, Jesus, for the humility I learned yesterday. You are my righteousness. You are my strength. You are my perfect resume.
Take my sins, take my failures, and take my fears of the unknown. My only hope is what You have already done for me.
