Have you ever had a conversation about spiritual things and run into someone who says, “Oh, I’m a very spiritual person”? But they don’t mean Jesus—they mean a kind of broad, intuitive ability to process the spiritual world on their own terms. They believe their spirituality shows up in all kinds of ways… and we’ll explore some of those later. But if you’ve ever tried to talk about faith with “very spiritual people,” you know how frustrating it can be. It’s like trying to grab Jell-O. Moral absolutes don’t matter. Logic doesn’t matter. Systematic theology doesn’t matter. Everything is subjective. Honestly, it has often felt like a complete waste of time. And in today’s passage, Jesus feels that same tension. We see how He responds to a group of “very spiritual” people who demanded a sign—proof of His power and authority—yet had no real desire to believe.
